Nguồn nhiên liệu hóa thạch ngày càng cạn kiệt, giá cả ngày càng tăng đồng thời lượng khí thải độc hại đang làm xáo trộn chu trình tự nhiên nên nhu cầu sử dụng nhiên liệu thay thế ngày càng tăng. Diesel sinh học là nhiên liệu thay thế quan trọng cho diesel vì các đặc tính nhiệt lý của diesel sinh học gần với diesel hơn và nó có thể được sử dụng trong động cơ diesel VCR một cách hiệu quả với việc lựa chọn các biến số động cơ thích hợp.
Dầu diesel sinh học, thường được gọi là nhiên liệu 'xanh' nguồn gốc sinh học, là một loại nhiên liệu thay thế có thể tái tạo được cho nhiên liệu diesel thông thường. Nó chủ yếu bao gồm các este alkyl của axit béo thu được từ các nguyên liệu khác nhau, chẳng hạn như dầu thực vật, mỡ động vật và dầu ăn thải. Khái niệm dầu diesel sinh học bắt nguồn từ việc tìm kiếm các nguồn năng lượng bền vững, có từ đầu thế kỷ 20.
